Autumn is the ideal time to clear gutters, but it's also when everyone books. If you've missed that window and your gutters are overflowing now, you don't have to wait until spring — winter is exactly when a blocked gutter causes problems, and it's a perfectly good time to clear one.
Rain doesn't stop a gutter clear
We clear gutters with a vacuum from ground level, and the debris inside a winter gutter is wet whether it's raining or not. Light and moderate rain makes no difference to the job — the vacuum lifts wet leaves and sludge just as well as dry.
The only weather that genuinely stops us is high wind, which makes long poles unsafe to control, and a hard frost that has frozen the gutter contents solid. Both are rare enough in a Kent winter that they cost us the odd day, not the season.
Why a winter clear is often the urgent one
Winter is when a blocked gutter shows you what it's doing. Rain is heavier and more persistent, the gutter is full of autumn leaf fall, and the overflow runs down the wall for weeks at a time. That's the pattern behind most of the damp patches and stained render we get called about in January and February.
Clearing the run mid-winter stops that immediately. It's not a second-best option — for a gutter that's overflowing now, it's the right one.
What about frozen gutters?
A gutter full of wet debris can freeze solid in a cold snap, and a frozen gutter can't be vacuumed until it thaws. It also can't drain, which is why overflows get worse in freezing weather. If your gutters are already full, the sensible move is to book the clear for the next mild spell rather than waiting for spring.
Booking at this time of year
Winter is our busiest gutter season, so it's worth getting in touch as soon as you notice a problem rather than watching it for a few weeks. You can get an instant price for your property online and we'll confirm a date from there.
The short version
- Gutters can be cleared all winter — rain doesn't stop the work.
- Only high wind and a hard frost pause things, and rarely for long.
- A mid-winter clear stops overflow damage at the point it's actually happening.
- Book as soon as you spot a problem; winter slots fill quickly.
